It’s that time of year where musicians battle it out at the MTV Video Music Awards. On August 20, the music world unites to determine what music stunned fans the most this past year.

There’s no doubt that many of the artists nominated at this year’s VMAs released stellar songs and music videos, but there can only be one winner in each category. Here are a few predictions about who will take home a “Moon Person”.

Video of the Year

Nominees: Ariana Grande “No Tears Left to Cry”; Bruno Mars ft. Cardi B “Finesse” (Remix); Camila Cabello ft. Young Thug “Havana”; The Carters “APESHIT”; Childish Gambino “This is America”; Drake “God’s Plan”

Prediction: The Carters “APESHIT”

People love Beyoncé. And because this is an award show supported by fan votes, Beyoncé and Jay-Z probably have this in the bag. Childish Gambino and Drake arguably have the best videos in this category; however, the Beyhive will come through with the votes.

Artist of the Year

Nominees: Ariana Grande, Drake, Post Malone, Cardi B, Camila Cabello, Bruno Mars

Prediction: Drake

After dropping quotable songs like “God’s Plan” and “Nice for What”, Drake has this category on lock. His popularity has skyrocketed in the last few months, especially due to memes and dance challenges. Drake’s Degrassi reunion alone makes him deserving of this award, but he sincerely and consistently put out quality music.

Best Collaboration

Nominees: Bebe Rexha ft. Florida Georgia Line “Meant to Be”; Bruno Mars ft. Cardi B “Finesse” (Remix); The Carters “APESHIT”; Jennifer Lopez ft. DJ Khaled & Cardi B “Dinero”; Logic ft. Alessia Cara & Khalid “1-800-273-8255”; N.E.R.D & Rihanna “Lemon”

Prediction: The Carters “APESHIT”

For the record, “APESHIT” shouldn’t be in this category. While Beyoncé and Jay-Z are separate entities, The Carters is a whole project and a joint production. A collaboration should be viewed as a one-time feature. Beyoncé and Jay-Z put out an entire album together. But because they are nominated, they will most likely win. Beyoncé fans are ride or die.

Best Rock

Nominees: Fall Out Boy “Champion”; Foo Fighters “The Sky is a Neighborhood”; Imagine Dragons “Whatever It Takes”; Linkin Park “One More Light”; Panic! At the Disco “Say Amen (Saturday Night)”; Thirty Seconds to Mars “Walk on Water”

Prediction: Panic! At the Disco “Say Amen (Saturday Night)”

It’s very obvious the VMAs are not catered to the rock music demographic. Because of this, there’s a solid chance the winner of this category will not reflect the true feelings of the rock community. Fall Out Boy, Panic! At the Disco, and Imagine Dragons probably have the most fans within the VMAs’ demographic. Brendon Urie is especially popular amongst teenage girls. His thrilling video “Say Amen (Saturday Night)” will give Panic! At the Disco a VMA for sure.

Best New Artist

Nominees: Bazzi, Chloe x Halle, Cardi B, Hayley Kiyoko, Lil Pump, Lil Uzi Vert

Prediction: Cardi B

While Lil Pump swept the nation with his unnecessarily repetitive song “Gucci Gang”, Cardi B had quite the fruitful year. She had several features, as well as many of her own singles, obliterate the charts. As the most well-known artist in this category, I don’t think Cardi will have any problems winning.

As always, award shows take unexpected turns. It’s impossible to know who will win. But to find out who will win big at the VMAs, tune in to MTV on August 20.
